therapist & author

Dr. Crystal Collier, LPC-S, has been a licensed professional therapist since 1999 and counselor supervisor since 2008. Drawing from her clinical experience, she integrates neuroscience into her therapeutic approach, helping individuals and families understand how the brain develops, how risky behaviors impact it, and how family-of-origin experience builds neural pathways for positive and negative coping. Her compassionate, evidence-based methods empower clients to create lasting behavioral change and strengthen mental health from the inside out.

As an author and educator, Dr. Collier translates complex neuroscience into practical, accessible tools for students, parents, and educators. Her award-winning book, The NeuroWhereAbouts Guide, offers infographic guidance for parents empowering them to protect children from 18 different high-risk behaviors. Her teen guide, Your Moves Matter, includes age-appropriate lessons that teach youth how to make safe, informed choices by understanding their own brain development. In her children’s book series, Know Your Neuro: Adventures of a Growing Brain, Dr. Collier introduces young readers to the fascinating world of brain science in a fun and relatable way by going on journeys with their superhero brain to grow their skills.

For her clients, Dr. Collier created a neurodevelopmentally informed workbook, FOO Mapping: An 8-Week Journey to Map the Family-of-Origin Patterns That No Longer Serve You, that guides readers through identifying learned patterns from childhood that drive unhealthy thoughts, emotions, and coping in adulthood. Over eight structured weeks, readers create a visual map of these patterns, connect them to stages of brain development, and build a personalized plan to rewire toward healthier beliefs, feeling states, and behaviors when their buttons are pushed.

When completing her 4-year longitudinal, mixed methods dissertation at Episcopal High School in Houston, Texas, Dr. Collier learned that students find neuroscience fascinating and learning how to protect their brain reduced risky behavior. She found that prevention works if it is done consistently! She created a free, plug-n-play prevention program for schools and families called KnowYourNeuro.org.

Know Your Neuro is based on developmental neuroscience and aims to keep a child's brain protected from high-risk behavior while strengthening executive function skills. Designed to be integrated into a school's health or homeroom curriculum, Know Your Neuro videos and class activities can be easily tailored to fit the developmental needs of K-12 youth. The program puts brain-based, social-emotional, and prevention skills training right in the hands of schools and caregivers.

Through her writing, speaking, and workshops, she bridges the gap between brain science and everyday life—equipping communities with the knowledge to foster prevention, healing, and lifelong well-being.
